You may remember the song of the Munch kins from "The Wizard of Oz"
that went, "Ding dong the witch is dead . . ." Well Ward Churchill is
not a witch and he is not dead, but today the University of Colorado
finally did the right thing, they fired him. You may remember
Churchill's inflammatory remarks comparing 9/11 victims to Nazi Adolph
Eichmann. Beyond that, Churchill was also plagued by scandal
surrounding supposed academic dishonesty. This is no surprise given his
questionable academic background. First, Mr. Churchill does not have a
doctorate, except for an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, which does
not count in my book. In fact, his degrees are not even in his field of
teaching. Churchill earned a BA and MA in Communication from Sangamon
State University, which is now the University of Illinois Springfield
(UIS). How Churchill was hired as a professor and given tenure is an
issue raised by Victor Davis Hanson in an online article for
National Review.
Churchill is but one of many examples of left-wing radicals teaching at
our nation's colleges and universities that have no business teaching
either because of lack of credentials, or appropriate research
requirements, which would prevent more moderate or conservative persons
from securing teaching positions. Many of Churchill's "fellow
travelers" are chronicled in David Horrowitz's
The Professors.
Horrowitz is a well-known conservative activist, who was a former
Communist radical in the 1960s. He now campaigns for the Academic Bill
of Rights (ABOR), which seeks to protect students from radical faculty
(it is opposed by such organizations as the American Historical
Association). UC Boulder students can now rest easy knowing that they
will never have to fear this charlatan. Hopefully, many more radical
professors will go the way of Ward Churchill and conservatives can take
back America's campuses.
